Last week in Part 1 we covered what it really costs to buy and initially set up a 10-year-old Genie GS-1930 or JLG 1930ES 19' electric scissor lift. If you’re an electrician (or any contractor) who just bought one of these machines, the single most important thing you need to focus on right now is battery care.
Unlike a boom lift, an electric scissor lift has no engine — everything runs on batteries. If the batteries are weak, sulfated, or poorly maintained, the machine will lose performance, shut down unexpectedly, or leave you stranded 19 feet in the air. On 10-year-old units this is the #1 cause of downtime.
Why Batteries Matter So Much on These Machines
The Genie GS-1930 and JLG 1930ES use four 6-volt deep-cycle batteries wired in series (24V system). OEM batteries and the original charger are designed to work together — using mismatched or aftermarket batteries can reduce performance and shorten lifespan.

Daily / Weekly Battery Checks (Do These Yourself)
⚠️ Safety Warning: Batteries produce explosive gases and can explode and ignite. Always wear safety goggles and work in a well-ventilated area when inspecting or replacing batteries.
- Visual Inspection – Look for corrosion, loose cables, cracked cases, or leaks.
- Clean Terminals (Field Hack) – Pour regular Coke over the terminals to quickly remove green oxidation, then rinse and dry.
- Water Levels – Check every 50–100 hours or weekly. Add distilled water only after charging. Never overfill.
- Charge the Batteries Fully – Always plug in after use and let them reach 100% before storing.
Quarterly / Annual Battery Maintenance
- Test specific gravity with a hydrometer (should read 1.265–1.280 on a full charge). A basic hydrometer can be purchased at your local auto parts store or on Amazon for $8–12.
- Equalize charge every 3–6 months (most modern chargers have an equalize mode).
- Check cable connections and battery hold-downs for tightness.

When to Replace the Battery Set
On a 10-year-old machine you will almost always need a new set of batteries. Realistic current cost (from gciron.com):
- Full 4-battery set: $900
- Labor to install: $500
Bottom Line for Contractors
Batteries are the heart of your 19' electric scissor lift. Spend the time and money to get them right in the first 30 days (already built into the $2,300–$2,500 budget from Part 1). New OEM properly maintained batteries will last 5 years. A well-maintained battery set will give you reliable daily performance and save you from surprise downtime on the jobsite.
